Ambition and Humility

1 Peter 5:5-7

5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. 6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

Christian relationships are to be marked by mutual humility, young toward old and old toward young. Ambition is fine if wrapped in humility. Humility means putting the other person first when it comes to needs being met. If selfishness or empty conceit have to do with your actions or attitudes, they introduce pride, and God will oppose you if you act out of pride. You can’t do much worse than having God oppose you. On the other hand, God will give the super-abundant supply of Himself to you to meet the need of the moment (Grace) if you walk in humility.

Be ambitious, but wait on God for promotion. Ambition should not result in a competition. Cast your anxiety about any of this on God; He cares for you. If you have an aggressive personality you may find waiting on God’s proper time for promotion is at times rather stressful. As you submit yourself under His mighty hand, you calm down and learn the patience it takes to trust God’s timing.
